This year the Bowling Committee decided to combine the Club Competition Presentations and the President & Captains’ Day.
The finals of the Club Competitions were played over the weekend Friday 8th,/Saturday 9th./Sunday 10th. September. The weather on Friday & Saturday was extremely hot and uncomfortable for both players and spectators. Sunday was overcast and warm and ideal for bowling. The Competitions Directors, Annette Finn & Paul Smyth did an excellent job running the competitions and scheduling matches over the three days. The standard of bowling was excellent throughout the competitions. Two of the more entertaining matches were the Mixed Singles and the Ladies’ Two-Bowl Singles. The Mixed Singles between Pat MacDonagh and Pat Taaffe was played on Saturday morning. This was a master class in tactical bowling and a “tit for tat” situation to the last end when Pat MacDonagh lost out to Pat Taaffe on a measure. Unfortunately there were not many around to see this classic match. The Ladies’ Two-Bowl between Mary Kenny and Andrea Sheridan was played Saturday afternoon. This match was progressing nicely until Andrea gained a six point lead on Mary. Mary then got possession of the jack and played minimum jack lengths and getting ahead of Andrea. When Andrea got possession of the jack she played full length jacks and got ahead of Mary. These opposing tactics by the two players persisted to the end of the match and Andrea who had possession of the jack for the last few ends won the match. Congratulations to all players on reaching the finals.
The prize giving event took place in the Bar. Prizes were dispensed by President Anne O’Herlihy and Captains Mary Kelly & Ciaran Murray ably assisted by Agnes Gillick and Marion O’Callaghan. Photos of the prize giving and their related competitions are contained in the Photo Album of this event which is accessible via the Link at the bottom of this page. Presentations were made to the Competition Directors, the Men’s and Ladies Captains, the winner and runner-up in the Novices’ Trophy and to the four Leinster Ladies who represented the ILB in the finals in Northern Ireland for selection to represent Ireland at the British Isles Competitions in England next year.
Following the presentations, light refreshments were provided and the delicious President & Captains’ cake went down well.
